Retro Island was founded in 2005 in Miami, Florida by Fran Vincent, author of MySpace for Musicians and former marketing and PR specialist for Warner Bros. Publications and University of Miami (Fla.) music industry professor. A year and a half later, Fran moved back to her hometown of Detroit where she continues to work with clients around the world.
Retro Island helps new labels launch their brands and break artists by developing and executing a marketing and publicity plan of attack.
We also work closely with creators in the fields of fashion, beauty, film, and technology, which enables us to help clients develop partnerships and promotions for their target markets.
Retro Island is also a music business consulting firm, offering one-on-one coaching for artists and industry executives. You can also learn in a group setting at any of Macomb College's music industry classes taught by RI owner Fran Vincent.
Fran Vincent is the author of MySpace for Musicians: The Comprehensive Guide to Marketing Your Music Online (Thomson Course Technology, 2007), and the founder and principal for Retro Island Productions, Inc., a marketing and public relations consulting company she created in 2005 following her departure from Warner Bros. Publications. This unique production company specializes in media and community relations, marketing, writing, editing, design, and music consulting, with emphasis on music/entertainment, education, curriculum design, and lifestyle products and services.
As a boutique agency owner, writer and marketer, Fran has worked with clients around the world including: the University of Miami's Frost School of Music in Florida; Midisoft Corporation, a pioneer in music technology; Walter Beasley, Billboard Top 20 Contemporary Jazz artist, performance consultant, and educator; Electronic Musician, the nation's premiere magazine for home studio musicians; and InTune Magazine, a monthly glossy, whose covers are graced by today's hottest artists including Kelly Clarkson, Outkast, and Jay-Z.
Through her consulting work, Fran and her team assist clients in building a positive image in their industry, and even take some into uncharted territory as they break ground in new markets. Clients rely on her to help them build their public profile, position them as experts in their fields, gain greater visibility among customers and their community, and navigate their community's players and pitfalls. Fran's results-driven PR/marketing campaigns, strategic counseling, relationship-building savvy, and writing and editing skills make her an essential addition to her clients' in-house teams.
Before starting her own company, Fran spent six years as the marketing and public relations specialist for Warner Bros. Publications, a division of Warner Music Group and Warner/Chappell Publishing. In this exciting position, she had the ear of journalists throughout the music industry and consumer press at large, helping to launch the company's much-anticipated music curriculum, DVD lines, "American Idol" products, and other music titles from well-known artists. She also headed up the marketing efforts for B2B programs, industry trade shows, as well as pop music, new media product lines, and the company's many music education advocacy efforts.
On top of her business endeavors, Fran is also an accomplished musician, performer, and college instructor. Before returning to her hometown of Detroit, where she teaches music industry classes at Macomb Community College Center for Continuing Education, Fran taught marketing, public relations, A&R admin, music licensing, and management courses at the University of Miami, working closely with the next generation of businessmen and women.
