H.W.S. was a kick ass band! My brother sang, E. Wolf on the six string, Phil Thacker on four and that crazy drummer Gino on the skins. I only saw them once but it sure was a treat.

Raf

One of the Best by Rick Fortner

One of the best

When I first saw Raf I was totally blown away. They were all 15 or 16 but they were allready amazing musicians. The band at that time was called Rif Raf and consisted of David Donigian Kenny Hill, Steve Madigan, Lawrence Wilson and James Nicoletti and I knew the first time I saw them I had to get them in the studio.

I'm pretty sure Steve was the main writer back then but all the guys put in a thousand percent. I think we did four songs but they took to the studio like a duck to water. It became second nature to them. Not going into detail of why it happened, but Steve was dismissed as was Nicoletti but the core of the band remained. Thats David, Kenny, and Lawrence.

Somehow and nobody knows how the next thing I heard Marc Aloia from Helicon had took over vocals which even before I ever heard them with Marc I thought it was a great addition. Just like Dan was for us, Marc was for Raf. A little older and A little wiser and he had been around the block in a badass band. (Helicon)

These guys took it further than us and anyone who knows me knows thats alot for me to admit but its true and I dont mind giving somebody their props when its due. But its not like we passed a torch to Raf its more like they ran up kicked us in the nuts grabbed the torch and ran with it. They Surpassed us especially in intensity. These guys were like a street gang who just happened to play Metal and I'm not bullshitting you at all. These guys could pretty much Out drink, out party, and outplay anybody around right from the beginning. Now maybe it was because they were young and full of piss and vinegar but they made me a believer right from the start.

With influences like Sabbath, Kiss, AC/DC, Priest, Maiden, Sabotage, Metallica, Twisted sister, Jim beam and Budweiser they had all the inspiration they needed to take over the rock and roll world and nothing could stop them. (except themselves) Which usually happens with most great bands. They opened for the likes of Seduce, Weapons, Scarlet, and Lizzy Borden and most of the time from my recollection they really gave the headliner a run for their money.

They caught the interest of some people from Brass Ring when Lawrence did the soundcheck on Lar's kit. Everybody loved the look (which was later completely ripped off by Skid row and others) the sound and their stage. It was like Alley metal at least thats what David and Kenny say. With Steve gone somebody had to step up to the plate for writing and Kenny did just that. However even Kenny will tell you that Dave, Marc, and Lawrence are the ones who made the songs come to life. Once again there you have it. Its the magic of the members involved that makes a good band great.

Kenny Hill. A amazing Guitar player whose only gotten better over the years and his open mindedness about his approach to the guitar has really began to shine especially with his new project.

Lawrence Wilson. I for one have never got along with Lawrence personally. However that does not decrease my appreciation for his ability on drums. Especially when he is working with David. He and Dave are in my humble opinion the best rhythm section to ever come out of Southwest Detroit. These two guys just make each other better and I really hope Sean Baker knows what a amazing rhythm section he has. Dave and Lawrence are not just another Bassplayer and Drummer.

David Dee. I could say alot about Dave. He and I have become close friends over the years. He's actually godfather to my son and theres no one else that I trust with that responsibility other than David. My respect for him as a player has only grown over the years. David has a work ethic that is unmatched by any other musician I have ever met. (Bar none) Dave is quite misunderstood sometimes because of this but he never asked for more than he is willing to do himself and I have nothing but respect for Dave.

Marc Aloia. (HERE COMES THE MONSTER)
Marc was the absolute perfect singer for this band. His range and style fit Kenny's writing to a 'T'. As I said before he had come out of a great band (Helicon) and as great as Helicon was Raf was a thousand times better. Everything blended. The attitude was there, the look was there, the sound was there, the songs were there, the intensity was there. Marc to this day has a take no prisoners attitude. He's back with Helicon now sounding better than ever but I still miss him with the boys from Raf

I said before I am not going to go into details (Drugs, Alchohol, Chicks, Petty jealousy) but the only thing that stopped them was them and thats a fucking shame. Because they had IT whatever IT was they had IT. Luckily for us all, all the guys are still playing. Dave and Lawrence can be found at Here at the Sean Baker Orchestra site.

Kenny can be found at At his myspace (CLICK HERE)

Marc can be found at his Myspace site (CLICK HERE)

Anyway as with Climax I just wanted to Salute another great band RAF - Rick Fortner

Helicon

Mary Mathes - The voice of an Angel but don't let it fool you because Mary could rock with the best of them. She had the looks, She had the voice, and she was also a damn good keyboard player. I lost touch with Mary many years ago but I hope she's doing fine.

Crazy Joe Garza - I call Joe "Crazy Joe" affectionately. B.C. took Joe Garza in the studio once because Ara couldnt make it and we had a blast. Back in the day in Helicon though Joe was a insane maniac. I remember he did the Angus walk and he was the only one who could actually pull it off and not look stupid doing it. I hear Joe's in Louisiana now but he gets back up here once in awhile. Great Background Vocals.

Jerry Hill - A more than capable guitar player with a uncanny similar playing style to Tony Iomi. Great power cords and great lead player. I'm sad to report that Jerry's had some problems lately and all of us that care about him hopes he makes it through alright.

BOOM BOOM/Terry Smith - Terry has always been one of the nicest people I have ever met in my entire life. A great heart and a great soul, Terry is always striving to get better and from the tracks I've heard on the new Helicon CD he's sounding great. Terry was the one who inspired Lawrence Wilson from Raf. Lawrence used to peek through Marc's basement window and watch Terry play and thats why Lawrence's kit is set up left handed just like Terry's.

Marc Aloia - I covered alot about Marc in my Raf blog but I reiterate Marc has a take no prisoners attitude and a thirst to put on the best show possible, Not just him but the whole band. Marc's like a cross between Alice Cooper and Kiss. The music has to be there first and formost and he knows a good song when he hears it, but he's also relentless when it comes to Helicons show. He's an idea Machine and truly the driving force behind that band. Mucho mucho respect Marc

Kevin Pruitt - I've always had a affinity for Kevin. I think its because we're both storytellers. Kevin is a natural born song writer, a very good bassplayer, and vocalist but once again Kevin's true talent lies in his writing. From the first time I ever started working with those guys when they were still called "Warning". The first thing I did was to have everyone try and write a song and besides Mark Wagner's song "Molts and hops" (haha) Kevin was the natural writer.

Once again with all great bands everybody did their share and put the overtime needed to look and sound great. I was fortunate enough to spend some time on the road with these guys and girl running sound for them in 82 I think but I always had a blast. There were fights and disagreements as in all bands but for the most part it was always a good time.

Marc and Terry have reformed the band and they have some great players playing with them. Ed Wolf, Tony Hunter, and another new guitar player that I have not met yet. They're myspace is rocking away, they were just chosen featured artist by myspace and they are very much honoring us in B.C. by recording a few of our songs. I wish them nothing but luck in the future.

Much Respect
Rick and the boys
