Are you ever hesitant to take your leftovers home? I know I am. I know they will most likely sit in the fridge for a week (or in some cases longer) before I start to question the smells eminating from the back of the fridge and decide it is time to clean it all out and start fresh.
Well now there is another option: Replate. Replate is a movement that you may have already, unwittingly, taken part in. To replate, as defined on the site is “to place unwanted leftovers…on top of the nearest trash can so they don’t go to waste.” It is an idea/movement I have been taking part in for a few months now, after going to see Iggy Pop in San Francisco. Sometimes I even go a step further and steal a fork from the restaurant (I didn’t say that) to drop in the bag so that someone who finds the food will have something to eat it with, or I ask if they have plastic utensils.
The idea behind Replate is to push this concept, to make sure people are aware of this movement and encourage people to take part in it. Replate has posters to download and put up; they’ll even send you Replate stickers. Though it all may seem like a joke, it is kind of a noble task when you take into account that there are a lot of people out there who are not getting as much food as they need. While Replate does not push this as their direct mission, every little bit helps. It seems like a pretty good grass roots movement that anyone can get behind and support. I wont get a tax write off for it, so there is nothing in it for me. Just knowing that, maybe, someone who was hungry got fed.

I think that this is a great idea. Especially for the homeless, and a majority of them are suffering from addiction to alcohol and drugs. -- drug rehab
I think this is a really nice idea. I wonder if it will take effect, the homeless in this city need all of the help they can get. --- Detriot addiction worker

First: I don't like that they are suggesting sitting the food on dumpsters.
Second: I think that this should be more of a movement!!! I am totally supportive of this!
Third: To help out the guy who left the first comment, drug rehab will help you find the one closest to you. I had to use them about a year ago, and they were extremely helpful. Best of luck!

Interesting program. Too bad I don`t have this kind of project in my city. It would be great. We sure need a thing like this and a drug treatment center also. If my city had these two, I think that it will be enough.
In my attempt to recycle I save every plastic can I get my hands on. This really helps me a lot. I can put my leftovers in them and use a paper bag for wrapping. I leave the food near the trash bin and hope that some homeless person will eat it. I do the same with clothes or shoes I don't wear anymore.

I tried too giving a homeless a piece of my sandwich and after he took it he threw it right at me. Lesson learned. Concert Tickets
Replate is not about giving money. You dont even have to see the person digging in the trash to get your leftovers. As for giving money to addicts and drunks, I try to remember, there but for the grace of God, go I, regardless of how much money they are making. They are slaves to their addictions. I've been blessed, and with those blessings, I have much responsibility. To be a good steward, meet my families needs, then maybe, their wants and help others when I can. If I dont have it, I dont give it.
Yeah, I remember that Kim..lol.
Thing is, and like I said to you, these guys over by 75 and 8 mi, as well as by the ambassador bridge in Mexicantown, have all been filmed taking money, and then waiting for their local heroin dealer to show up, or heading driectly around the corner for "hootch" or both.
Not saying all of them are doing that, but it sure seemed that way in the documentary report. Also, these guys, especially the ones who are hitting the canadians as the come off the bridge into the U.S, are known for bringing in 75-200 dollars per day! You times that by 5- 7 days aweek, and I aint feelin' as giving no more!!! Thats more tax free money than I make a week!...lol
I know, I kinda got away from the intitial topic. So, I'll end on this note. I'm all for Replate. Good going. If I ever have anything "leftover", i'll do the same. Ya know there is an organization kinda like this, that takes the leftovers from concerts. You know....all the food that was made for rock stars, etc, but was never eaten?! Anyways, this company gets the ok, and picks it all up, and delivers it to homeless shelters, etc in nearby cities. Believe it or not, some of the entertainers actually refuse to allow it, and throw it away. Hmmmmm.
Kev
Ive had that happen to me, also. I am such a softy that I gave up the change I had. Actually have had it happen to me in your Mexicantown, got a rather strange look from KP. I figure let God sort out the details. At least he was honest. Nice thing about Replate, I just sit my extras on top of a trash can after they finish their hooch, they might get hungry.
After driving home from eating in Mexicantown last week, I tried to give my left-over chimichanga to some bum who was sitting under the 8 Mile/I-75 overpass, but he said to me, "I don't want your food! I want your loose change so I can buy me some hootch."
