I started producing music in 2001 when I bought a Boss DR-202 "groove machine", and it was a piece of sh*** (pardon my French), but getting that drum machine was probably the best decision I have ever made in my life. After having it I learned the theory and intricacies of rhythm programming, and I owe what skill (if any) I have presently to that machine. I have of coarse upgraded my set up to a MPC driven studio over the years, but don't forget your roots! I started off producing Techno music and was slowly driven towards Hip Hop because of the complexity of the break beat, and how it just seems to make everyone bob their head, regardless of whether or not they know it or want to for that matter. I don't really know what, or when it clicked but it did, and at that point I just was totally submerged in Hip Hop...
